Tonight is the first game of the World Series that features two teams that have not been in the series for decades. The Cubs have one of the funniest curses of the goat that goes back to 1908. Cleveland is a great city that fell on hard times in recent decades. It is enjoying a sports revival thanks to Lebron James and now the baseball team. Both teams are sympathetic. Except there is one huge problem with Cleveland's team. The logo is a terrible stereotype of Native Americans. It is dehumanizing. Recently, the logo became an issue in the American League Championship Series when an advocate asked a court to issue an injunction against the name and a broadcaster based in Toronto refused to say the team's name. It is also a cruel irony that millions will watch the Cleveland team and be exposed to the insidious logo and name while very few knew about the courageous Native American protest of the pipeline scheduled to be built in North Dakota. Hopefully some publicity about the harms of mascots with Native American imagery will arise as a result of the World Series.
